How does YouTube payout work? The monthly cycle, the five thresholds and the US tax form

When YouTube actually pays, the five thresholds before the first payment (€70, not $100, in euros), and the US tax form that can cost 24% of everything.

Published November 1, 2026

The short version

  • YouTube pays once a month, through AdSense for YouTube. Last month's earnings are finalised between the 7th and the 12th, your balance is checked on the 20th, and payment is issued between the 21st and the 26th.
  • There are five thresholds, not one. The one everyone knows is the payment threshold: $100, but €70 for an account in euros and £60 in sterling. Below it, the balance rolls over to the next month.
  • Money earned in January reaches you between late February and late March, three to eight weeks after the month ends, depending on the payment method.
  • The US tax form matters wherever you live. Without it, Google may withhold 24% of your total earnings worldwide. With it, a resident of a treaty country such as France, Germany or Canada can have 0% withheld on earnings from US viewers.
  • No early payments, no change of currency. YouTube says so explicitly.

Questions about YouTube payouts tend to arrive at the same moment: the first month in the Partner Program, an estimated revenue figure in Studio, and no money in the bank. The answer is almost never a problem with the account. It is a calendar, a set of thresholds, and one tax form.

Everything below comes from YouTube's help centre and the IRS's own treaty tables, read in November 2026.

The monthly cycle, step by step

YouTube's payment cycle runs on a fixed monthly rhythm. Here is what happens to the money you earn in January:

Timeline from January to March: earnings accrue during January, are finalised between 7 and 12 February, the balance is checked on 20 February, payment is issued between 21 and 26 February, then arrives within 1 to 2 days by Hyperwallet, up to 7 business days by bank transfer, up to 15 business days by wire, or 2 to 4 weeks by check.

Money earned in January is never paid in January. The fastest case lands in late February, the slowest in late March.

  1. During January, YouTube Analytics shows estimated revenue. It is an estimate, adjusted about a week later and again when it is finalised.
  2. Between 7 and 12 February, January's earnings are finalised and added to your balance in AdSense for YouTube. Adjustments for invalid traffic, copyright claims, certain campaign types and US taxes are applied at this stage.
  3. On 20 February, the balance must have reached the payment threshold, and any change to your payment details, including removing a hold, must be complete. A change made on the 21st waits for the next cycle.
  4. Between 21 and 26 February, the payment is issued and a "Payment pending" line appears in your account. If the 21st falls on a weekend or a holiday, it goes out on the next business day.
  5. Then it travels, at a speed set by the method: 1 to 2 days to a Hyperwallet account, up to 7 business days by bank transfer (EFT), up to 15 business days by wire, 2 to 4 weeks for a check. Western Union can no longer be selected.

YouTube is categorical on one point: it cannot issue a payment outside this cycle, for any reason. There is no early payment and no weekly option.

Five thresholds, not one

Almost every article mentions one threshold. YouTube's help centre lists five, and each one triggers something you have to do.

Threshold In US dollars In euros What happens
Tax info $0 n/a Submit your US tax info. Required in every currency, from the start
Verification $10 $10 equivalent Verify your identity and your address
Payment method $10 €10 Choose how you get paid
Payment $100 €70 You are paid that month, if there is no hold
Cancellation $10 €10 Above it, closing the account triggers a final payment

Other currencies have their own amounts: £60 in sterling, C$100 in Canadian dollars, Fr100 in Swiss francs, ¥8,000 in yen. They follow the reporting currency of your AdSense for YouTube account, and YouTube states that the payment currency cannot be changed afterwards.

If you close the account with a balance above the cancellation threshold, the final payment arrives about 90 days after the end of the month, provided there are no holds and every step to get paid was complete.

How long until the first payment

Set the payment threshold against measured RPMs and the first payment stops being abstract. AIR Media-Tech, which read the Studio data of 300 channels, puts the median RPM at $2.30 per 1,000 views, all YouTube revenue sources included. Depending on the RPM:

RPM Views needed to reach $100
$10.22 (education median) about 9,800
$2.30 (all-niche median) about 43,500
$2.05 (gaming median) about 48,800
$0.33 (kids' content median) about 303,000

Those are views after you join the Partner Program: the views that got you to the eligibility thresholds paid nothing, as we detail in YouTube monetization requirements. Add the calendar above, and a channel that crosses $100 during a month is paid three to eight weeks after that month ends.

Your own RPM is the figure that replaces this table, and it depends heavily on your audience's country and on the season: we broke both down in YouTube ad revenue. Our revenue calculator works from the same measured ranges.

The US tax form, wherever you live

This is the step that costs the most when it is skipped, and the one creators outside the United States most often assume does not concern them.

YouTube is explicit: every monetising creator, wherever they live, must submit US tax info in AdSense for YouTube. Google acts as a withholding agent under US law, and withholds tax on the part of your earnings that comes from viewers in the United States: ads, YouTube Premium, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and channel memberships.

What it costs depends on what you submit:

Your situation What is withheld
No tax info, individual account 24% of your total earnings worldwide
No tax info, business outside the US 30% of earnings from US viewers
Tax info submitted, no treaty claimed 30% of earnings from US viewers
Tax info submitted, treaty claimed the treaty rate, from 0% to 30%, on earnings from US viewers
US creator with valid tax info nothing

The first line is the trap. Without a form, the deduction applies to everything, not just US earnings. YouTube's own example: a creator in India earns $1,000 in a month, $100 of it from US viewers. With no tax info, $240 is withheld. With tax info and India's treaty rate of 15%, $15. With tax info but no treaty claim, $30.

YouTube classes Partner Program earnings as "other copyright royalties". The IRS treaty table for that type of income lists 0% for residents of France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Canada and Japan, 10% for Mexico and Morocco, and 15% for India and Tunisia. A French creator who files the form and claims the treaty therefore has nothing withheld on US earnings, and up to 24% of everything withheld if they never file it.

Three dates to keep in mind:

  • 10 December: the yearly deadline to submit the form or claim a treaty benefit. It is also the date by which an updated form can get excess withholding refunded.
  • The end of the third full calendar year after signing: when a tax form expires, even if nothing has changed. A form signed in 2026 expires at the end of 2029.
  • 14 April: the latest date for the year-end form (1042-S) showing what was withheld the year before.

The form is a W-8 if you live outside the US and a W-9 if you live in it; AdSense for YouTube walks you through the choice. Withholding does not replace the tax owed where you live: YouTube points out that local income tax may still apply, and that it cannot give tax advice. Neither can we. A tax professional can.

Why a payment can be late or missing

When a payment does not arrive, the cause is usually one of these, all listed by YouTube:

  • The balance was under the threshold on the 20th. It rolls over to the next month, and nothing is lost.
  • A hold on the account, or a change to payment details made after the 20th.
  • Missing US tax info, which is a condition of payment, and required before a new account's first payment.
  • Monetisation suspended, or a breach of the AdSense or YouTube monetisation policies. In that case payment may be withheld and earnings deducted, from the date Google starts investigating.
  • Your channel belongs to a multi-channel network. YouTube then pays the network, which pays you on its own terms.

Two edge cases. A check that never arrived can be reissued from AdSense for YouTube, but only once 60 days have passed since its issue date. And money from merchandise sold through your channel's store does not go through this cycle at all: the retailer pays you directly.

What the payment contains

The cycle above carries every YouTube revenue stream: 55% of the net ad revenue on long-form videos, 45% of your allocation from the Shorts pool, and 70% of the net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. How those shares turn into income at different channel sizes is in how much YouTubers make, and why the same number of views pays so differently from one channel to the next is in how much YouTube pays per view.

If you are still on the way in, the watch hours calculator shows how far you are from the threshold, including the February 2027 doubling for new applicants. And to see which channels lead each market, month after month, our country rankings do the counting.

FAQ

When does YouTube pay creators?

Once a month. Earnings from the previous month are finalised between the 7th and the 12th, and if your balance has reached the payment threshold by the 20th, payment is issued between the 21st and the 26th. Money earned in January is paid in late February, and arrives between one day and a few weeks later depending on the payment method.

What is the minimum payout on YouTube?

$100 for an AdSense for YouTube account in US dollars, €70 in euros and £60 in sterling. Below the threshold, the balance rolls over to the next month. Before that, two smaller thresholds apply: identity and address verification at $10, and choosing a payment method at $10.

How does YouTube send the money?

Through AdSense for YouTube, by bank transfer (up to 7 business days), wire transfer (up to 15 business days), check (2 to 4 weeks) or Hyperwallet (1 to 2 days), depending on what is available at your payment address. Western Union can no longer be selected.

Do I have to give US tax info if I don't live in the US?

Yes. Every monetising creator must, wherever they live. Without it, Google may withhold up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings. With it, only earnings from US viewers are taxed, at a rate from 0% to 30% depending on your country's treaty with the US. Residents of France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada and Japan, among others, are listed at 0%.

Can I get paid early or more often?

No. YouTube states that it cannot issue payments outside its standard monthly timeline, for any reason.

Why didn't I get paid this month?

Usually because the balance was below the threshold on the 20th, in which case it rolls over to the next month. The other causes listed by YouTube: a hold on the account, payment details changed after the 20th, missing US tax info, or suspended monetisation.

Useful sources

The revenue in Studio and the money in your bank run on two different calendars. The gap between them is mechanical, documented, and mostly avoidable with one tax form.

What no help page documents is which of your videos will earn that money. VideoTrends measures every video against the median of its own channel, so the formats that break out are visible the day they do.
