How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?+
There is no single answer, and any site quoting one is ignoring the two variables that decide it. At ten-minute videos with 40% retention you need about 60,000 views. At three-minute videos with the same retention, roughly 200,000. Length and retention move the answer by a factor of three or more.
Do the 4,000 hours have to be in one year?+
They are counted over the previous 12 months on a rolling basis. Hours from thirteen months ago no longer count. That is why a slow, steady trickle can plateau below the threshold forever — you need to accumulate faster than the old hours expire, which works out around 340 hours a month.
Do Shorts count towards the 4,000 hours?+
No. Shorts feed a separate route: 10 million valid public Shorts views over 90 days, with the same 1,000 subscriber requirement. Watch time from Shorts does not accumulate towards the 4,000 hours.
What counts as a valid public watch hour?+
Time watched on public videos on your channel. Private and unlisted videos do not count, nor do deleted videos, ads you ran to promote yourself, or paid traffic. Live stream watch time does count.
What is a realistic average view duration?+
It depends heavily on format and length. Short videos routinely hold 50-70%; longer ones commonly sit between 25% and 45%. Be sceptical of the widely-repeated claim that 50% retention "unlocks the suggested feed" — that threshold has never been published by YouTube.
