Why big view counts mislead you

  • A video with 2M views on a channel that always does 2M tells you nothing. One with 500K on a channel that normally does 50K tells you everything.
  • YouTube’s trending page shows what is already big in your country. By then the format has been copied for weeks.
  • Comparing a video against its channel median by hand means opening 50 tabs, reading numbers off thumbnails, and doing arithmetic you will not repeat tomorrow.

How the multiplier is calculated

01

We take the channel’s median

Not the average — the median of its recent videos. One viral hit would drag an average upward and hide every other outlier on that channel.

02

We divide the video by that median

A video at 997K views on a channel whose median is 172K scores ×5.8. Same maths for a 3,000-subscriber channel and a 30-million one.

03

We keep watching it

View counts are re-read continuously, so you see whether a signal is still climbing or has flattened out.

What you get

Exact multiplier, not a guess

Every video carries its score and the two numbers behind it: its views and its channel’s median.

Search any topic

Type a subject and we score every channel that comes back — including ones you have never heard of.

Works at any channel size

A ratio normalises size, so a small channel breaking out ranks next to a giant one.

Filter to what matters

By language, publication window, minimum multiplier, views, subscriber count and duration.

Save what you find

Bookmark videos into folders, add a note explaining why, export the lot to CSV.

Any public channel

No need for the creator to be a customer. If the channel is public, it can be measured.

FAQ

What is a YouTube outlier video?

A video that significantly overperforms its own channel’s baseline — typically several times the channel’s median views on recent uploads. It is not about absolute view count: 500K views on a channel that normally does 50K is a far stronger signal than 2M on a channel that routinely does 1.5M.

Why the median and not the average?

A single viral video pulls an average upward and hides every other outlier on that channel. The median — the middle value of recent uploads — is not moved by one exceptional result, so it stays a fair baseline.

Can I check a channel I do not own?

Yes. Everything is computed from public data — view counts, publication dates, durations. You never need access to anyone’s YouTube Studio, and private analytics such as watch time or retention are never involved.

How many videos do you need before a score is reliable?

A channel needs at least three recent videos for a median to mean anything. Below that no score is shown, rather than showing a number we cannot stand behind.
