What are YouTube’s rules for chapters?+
Three of them, and all are mandatory: the first chapter must start at 0:00, there must be at least three chapters, and each must last at least 10 seconds. Break any one and YouTube silently shows no chapters at all. This tool applies all three before showing you anything.
Where do I put the chapters?+
In the video description, one per line, in the format "0:00 Title". Putting them at the top is conventional and makes them easy to find, but YouTube reads them anywhere in the description.
Do chapters help a video rank?+
They help viewers navigate, which helps retention, which matters. Google also surfaces chapters as key moments in search results — a real visibility gain on tutorials and how-to content.
Why are the titles sometimes off?+
They are written from the transcript, so anything shown on screen but not spoken is invisible to the tool. Treat them as a first pass: fixing three titles is far faster than writing ten.
Does it work on videos without captions?+
No. Chapters are derived from the transcript, so no captions means nothing to read. Most videos have at least auto-generated ones.
How many chapters should a video have?+
Roughly one every one to three minutes, so five to fifteen for a typical video. Too many turns the description into a wall and dilutes the point of chaptering.
