How it works
- 01
Describe the video
Include the surprising part — that is what the curiosity gap gets built around.
- 02
Choose an intensity
Light leans on specificity. Strong allows one emphasised word, never a full shouted title.
- 03
Check it against the video
If the video does not deliver what the title implied, the retention drop costs more than the click gained.
What people use it for
A genuinely surprising result
When the outcome really is unexpected, a flat title undersells it. That is the case clickbait was invented for.
Competing in a saturated topic
When twenty channels cover the same thing, the angle in the title is what separates them.
Testing a bolder version
Generate a stronger variant of a title you already have and see which one you can actually stand behind.
Frequently asked questions
Does clickbait get you penalised on YouTube?+
Curiosity does not. Deception does — but through viewer behaviour rather than a formal penalty. A title that oversells produces clicks followed by immediate exits, and that pattern tells the system the video did not satisfy the people it reached. Misleading metadata can also breach the spam policies outright.
What is the difference between clickbait and a good title?+
Only whether the video pays it off. "I quit my job to do this full time" is clickbait if you did not, and simply an accurate title if you did. The phrasing is identical; the honesty is not.
Should the whole title be in capitals?+
No. One emphasised word can add weight; a fully capitalised title reads as noise and is often what viewers use to identify low-quality channels. That is why the strong setting here allows one word at most.
Do questions work as titles?+
Only when the viewer cannot answer them instantly. "Is coffee bad for you?" is answerable by anyone with an opinion, so it creates no gap. "Why does decaf cost more than regular?" does.
Are numbers really more effective?+
Specific numbers make a promise concrete and set an expectation the video can meet. "30 days" tells you the scope; "a long time" does not. The number has to be real — inventing one is the kind of small lie viewers notice.
Can I combine clickbait with SEO?+
Rarely well. Search titles need the exact phrase people type, which usually kills the curiosity gap. Decide which traffic source a given video is for, and title it for that one.
