How it works

  1. 01

    Load a video

Paste any public video URL. A link that already has a timestamp opens at that point.

  2. 02

    Step through it

Frame, quarter-second, second or five seconds. The frame step is the one you want for a fast gesture.

  3. 03

    Copy the timestamp

The link points at the exact second — useful for a comment, a report or a note to yourself.

What people use it for

Reading on-screen text

A number or a name shown for one second is unreadable at normal speed.

Studying a technique

A movement in a tutorial often makes sense only when broken into steps.

Citing a precise moment

A timestamped link is far more useful than "around eight minutes in".

Frequently asked questions

How do I watch a YouTube video frame by frame?+

YouTube’s own player supports "." and "," to step forward and back one frame while paused — the fastest method if you know it. This tool gives you the same control with buttons, a visible timecode, and a copyable timestamped link, which the native shortcuts do not.

Can I save the frame as an image?+

No, and no honest browser tool can. The player runs in a cross-origin iframe, so the browser blocks any attempt to read its pixels — that is a security boundary, not a missing feature. Tools that offer frame export download the video first, which YouTube’s terms prohibit. Your system screenshot does the job.

Is the frame step exact?+

It steps by 1/25 of a second, which matches 25fps video. A 30 or 60fps video moves by slightly more or less than one true frame, because the embedded player does not expose the video’s frame rate.

Does this work on any video?+

Any video that allows embedding. A minority of channels disable it, and those can only be stepped through on YouTube itself using the "." and "," keys.

Is the video downloaded?+

No. It plays from YouTube in an embedded player, exactly as it would on any site. Nothing passes through our servers.

Why does the player reload when I step?+

Moving the playback position without loading YouTube’s JavaScript API means reloading the embed at the new time. It avoids adding a third-party script and a cookie for a tool that otherwise needs neither.
