Music videos beating their own channel

These are not the most viewed music videos. They are the ones pulling far more views than their own channel normally gets, which is what a format taking off actually looks like.

How this ranking is built

Every month we run seven separate searches for music content through the official YouTube Data API and keep the channels that come back on more than one video, then add any channel a third-party ranking already places in this category. Each search result is then checked against its own recent uploads: at least one in five of its latest video titles must be about music, which keeps out large general channels that only touched the topic once or twice. 307 channels were analysed for this edition. Every figure in the table comes from the official API, never from a scraper. Order is by subscriber count, because that is what the question asks. The two columns no other ranking shows are ours: median views on recent long-form videos, measured from our own tracking, and the ratio of those median views to subscriber count. Above 1, a channel is carried by recommendation rather than by its subscriber base. Median rather than average throughout: one viral video makes an average useless as a baseline. Channels are only measured once we have at least three tracked videos for them, so the median column is filled for the top of the list and empty further down.

What this ranking does not tell you

Subscriber counts are truncated by YouTube to three significant figures, so a channel shown at 1.23M has between 1,230,000 and 1,239,999 subscribers. No tool can be more precise, because YouTube does not publish a more precise number. Ranking by subscribers also favours older channels: a count is cumulative and records who once clicked subscribe, not who watches now. That is exactly why the median views column is there.

Questions about this ranking

What are the best music YouTube channels?+

The table above lists them by subscriber count for the September 2026 edition, built from 307 channels found through seven separate searches for music content. Each one links straight to its YouTube page. Alongside subscribers we show median views on recent videos, which tells you what a channel actually reaches today rather than how many people subscribed over its lifetime.

How often is this music ranking updated?+

Once a month. Each edition is frozen in our database and dated on the page, so the figures you see are the ones we measured, not a cached estimate of unknown age. Previous editions are what let us show whether a channel moved up or down.

How do you decide which channels count as music channels?+

We run seven different searches for music content and keep only channels that come back on more than one video. A channel seen once is usually an off-topic result, so it is dropped. We then read each channel's latest video titles and require at least one in five to be about music: a huge tech or science channel that happens to mention the topic twice does not belong on this list. We deliberately never search for phrases like "best music channels": that surfaces videos talking about the topic, not the channels making it. Channels a third-party ranking already lists in this category are added on top, and YouTube's auto-generated "Topic" channels are excluded, since there is nothing to watch or follow on them.

Why does this list have exactly 50 channels?+

We publish in steps of ten, so this list holds exactly 50 channels. We aim for 50, drop to 40 or 30 when a topic has fewer channels that genuinely qualify, and only go down to 20 for narrow niches. A round number means the list was cut deliberately, not that the data ran out mid-way.

Are these subscriber counts exact?+

No, and no ranking anywhere can make them exact. YouTube truncates public subscriber counts to three significant figures, and its API returns the same truncated value. A channel displayed at 1.23M has somewhere between 1,230,000 and 1,239,999 subscribers. Only the channel owner sees the exact number, in YouTube Studio.

What does the views per subscriber column mean?+

It is median views on recent long-form videos divided by subscriber count. Below 1, a channel reaches fewer people per video than it has subscribers, which is normal for large established channels. Above 1, it is being pushed by recommendation beyond its own audience, which is usually the sign of a channel in a growth phase.

Can I track a music channel over time?+

Yes. VideoTrends follows any public channel and compares each new video to that channel's own median, so an unusual performance is visible immediately rather than months later. That works on channels you do not own, in any country and any language.
